On the Independence of Observations between Experiments

چکیده
In experimental economics there exists a lively debate about the independence of observations. Although opinions on the issue differ widely, all concerns regard the independence of subjects’ behavior within one session or experiment. This paper attempts to shed some light on the independence of observations between experiments, if they are generated by the same subjects. We analyze experiments with an allocation decision and find that participation in previous experiments tends to increase the amount subjects allocate to themselves. Hence, independence between experiments cannot be presumed if subjects participate repeatedly. The finding has implications for the interpretation of previous allocation decision results and deserves attention when running future experiments. JEL classification: C90, D03, D84

EMPIRICAL BAYES ANALYSIS OF TWO-FACTOR EXPERIMENTS UNDER INVERSE GAUSSIAN MODEL
A two-factor experiment with interaction between factors wherein observations follow an Inverse Gaussian model is considered. Analysis of the experiment is approached via an empirical Bayes procedure. The conjugate family of prior distributions is considered. Bayes and empirical Bayes estimators are derived. Application of the procedure is illustrated on a data set, which has previously been an...
متن کاملGeneralized Baum-Welch and Viterbi Algorithms Based on the Direct Dependency among Observations
The parameters of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) are transition and emission probabilities‎. ‎Both can be estimated using the Baum-Welch algorithm‎. ‎The process of discovering the sequence of hidden states‎, ‎given the sequence of observations‎, ‎is performed by the Viterbi algorithm‎. ‎In both Baum-Welch and Viterbi algorithms‎, ‎it is assumed that...
متن کاملOptimum Local Decision Rules in a Distributed Detection System with Dependent Observations
The theory of distributed detection is receiving a lot of attention. A common assumption used in previous studies is the conditional independence of the observations. In this paper, the optimization of local decision rules for distributed detection networks with correlated observations is considered. We focus on presenting the detection theory for parallel distributed detection networks with fi...
متن کاملOn the Relationship between Central Bank’s Independence and Inflation Rate in Iran
The purpose of present paper was to examine the relationship between central bank independence and inflation rate in Iran over 1960-2008. First, central bank independence has been accomplished through three indices including legal and real CBI indices and turnover rate of central bank governor index. Then, Augmented Dickey-Fuller test for model stationary of variables has been done by applying ...
متن کاملImpact of Institutional Ownership and Board Independence on the Relationship Between Excess Free Cash Flow and Earnings Management
However, the free cash flows scale is important for the financial health of the company, but it has also its own limitations. Moreover, it’s not immune from accounting tricks. Free cash flows can be considered as a measure of value for shareholders of listed companies on Tehran Stock Exchange. The managers of these companies have tended to use the earnings management for managing the free cash ...
